ARE YOU READY FOR A PET?

Before you decide to adopt, ask yourself the following questions to determine if your family is ready to take on the responsibility of caring for a pet:

How old are your kids?
Different pets are appropriate for different ages. For example, a four-year-old is simply not capable of taking on the responsibility of a cat or kitten. Just because a child begs for a pet does not mean that they are ready to have one. Ultimately, you are responsible for the animal's daily care.

Have you thought about the cost?
Many people don't think past the initial fee required to adopt. A cat can cost up to $575 per year after the initial capital investment (see sidebar).

Are you committed?
By adopting a cat or kitten, you are taking on a commitment to care for that animal for the rest of his or her life. A cat can live to be at least 15 years and many live to be older. You and your family should realize that owning a pet is a lifetime commitment with vet visits, food and supplies, and a big investment of time and love.

Are you educated about what caring for an animal involves?
A cat or kitten is an animal. This means cleaning up bathroom accidents and vomit, scratched furniture, and dealing with other typical animal behaviors. You need to be ready and committed to work through these situations.

Don't get a pet to teach your child responsibility.
If your child fails to be responsible, the animal may be harmed.
